Istituita nel 1845, la Società di Incoraggiamento per gli artisti era un’importante istituzione ducale che aveva lo scopo di

animare gli artisti di qualsivoglia parte di questi Stati, ancorché dimoranti all’Estero, commettendo loro lavori od acquistandone le opere di un merito segnalato, sia che riguardino gli studj del Disegno, sia le Arti in genere, specialmente quando tali opere presentino un lodevole od utile miglioramento dell’attuale condizione delle arti.

L’organico della società era inizialmente costituito dal Presidente a carica perpetua, nella persona del Ministro di Pubblica Istruzione del ducato di Modena, da un vice-presidente e da circa 200 soci, trenta dei quali delegati a rappresentare la Società. Gli affari ordinari erano governati da una Direzione Amministrativa composta dal vice-presidente e da sei delegati eletti dai soci. Un Segretario stendeva gli atti delle deliberazioni, si incaricava della corrispondenza, mandando ogni triennio ad ogni socio un resoconto dell’amministrazione. Nuovi soci potevano essere ammessi a discrezione della Direzione, che decideva anche dell’ordinazione dei lavori, nonché dell’acquisto degli stessie delle modalità di pagamento. Nella scelta delle opere la Direzione si avvaleva dell’aiuto di due Commissioni speciali di tre componenti ciascuna, anche non facenti parte della Società. Lo Statuto della Società stabiliva che non si poteva oltrepassare l’importo di Lire duemila per l’acquisto di ogni singolo lavoro. Ogni socio versava annualmente Lire trenta per il sostentamento della Società ed era vincolato per almeno tre anni, raggiunti i quali, poteva ritirarsi.

Ogni tre anni, in occasione dell’esposizione triennale che si teneva nella Reale Accademia Atestina di Belle Arti in Modena, gli oggetti commissionati o segnalati dalla Società erano esposti al pubblico e tra questi la Direzione sceglieva quali acquistare. Tali opere venivano poi distribuite ai soci mediante una lotteria.

Alla prima esposizione del 1848 furono presentate 75 opere, comprendenti quasi tutte le arti, come ad esempio una specchiera in pastiglia con sei piccole cornici lavorate, e un quadro ad olio rappresentante Davide in atto di presentare al popolo la testa di Golia.

Tra i componenti della Società, che erano 228, provenienti dalle province di Reggio e Modena, troviamo due artisti illustri che sicuramente conoscevano Lesignana: Vandelli Nob. Prof. Maggiore Francesco architetto della Real Corte di Modena e Manzini Luigi. Il primo aveva una villa a Lesignana e aveva curato la ricostruzione della chiesa parrocchiale in forme neoclassiche come la si può ammirare oggi, mentre il secondo, pittore di fama, aveva prestato la sua opera all’interno della nuova chiesa dipingendo la grande pala dell’Assunta e altri quadri che arredano le cappelle laterali.

Se nel primo triennio non troviamo traccia di Giovanni Spaggiari negli elenchi della Società, nel secondo (1848-1850) viene presentato un “cuscino da lavoro per donna, con incassamento in legno intagliato”, un piccolo lavoro d’intaglio che venne acquistato dalla Società per Lire 265,76 e che, secondo quanto riporta il Venturi, gli procurò grandi lodi. Nel terzo triennio (1851-1853) troviamo altri due lavori di Giovanni (il primo dei quali di una certa complessità):al lotto 50, riprodotta anche in tavola, una “Toilette intagliata in bosso, a basso rilievo, con statuette alla cima”, e al lotto 57 una “Calamariera intagliata in bosso”. Entrambe le opere vengono acquistate per Lire 401 e 70, rispettivamente.

Queste opere procurarono a Giovanni ammirazione generale e una menzione nella relazione dell’allora segretario, Domenico Urtelor.

La relazione inizia con un affresco della situazione della Società che

s’incammina pel quarto [triennio] florida e rigogliosa. Né potrebbe essere altrimenti, giacché la patria nostra è troppo filantropica per non lasciar timore alcuno di abbandono verso qualunque istituzione che tenda al proprio decoro.

Dopo questa presentazione iniziale, vengono fatte alcune considerazioni sui lavori presentati, in cui si possono ravvisare riferimenti ai lavori presentati da Giovanni:

Ne’ passar si deve sotto silenzio essere stata cagione che siensi mostrati in tutta pienezza molti talenti, i quali forse o giacerebbero per sempre ignorati, o per mancanza di emulazione e di mezzi languirebbero isteriliti. Ne avete prova dai finiti lavori d’intaglio che vi ha offerto un rozzo coltivatore dei campi, e dalle non poche pregevoli mobiglie fabbricate da oscuri artigiani di modesti paesi e di povere borgate. […] Diversi ingegni sono riusciti così felicemente nei lavori d’intaglio, da potersi francamente asseverare nulla rimanere a desiderarsi in quelli, vuoi per eleganza, vuoi per franchezza di tocco.

Nella parte finale della relazione si accenna al fatto che, allora come oggi, i fondi a disposizione per gli artisti sono sempre scarsi:

la Direzione istessa […] ha amato meglio di dare poche commissioni di rimarchevole pregio, di quello che fare molti acquisti di minore importanza, soddisfacendo così all’indole dellaSocietà,chevuoletrovinogliartisti un mezzo di lasciar libero sfogo al naturale loro genio, per l’ordinario inceppato dalla ristrettezza generale delle private commissioni, le quali necessariamente il più delle volte si risentono delle limitate fortune dei committenti.

Dopo la toilette e la calamariera, presentate nel terzo triennio, le opere di Giovanni non saranno più presenti nelle esposizioni modenesi. Ritroveremo un suo lavoro, di cui ci dà ampia notizia il Venturi, nell’Esposizione Italiana del 1881 a Milano.
